Benjamin de Medeiros Melo passed away peacefully at the age of 81, with his loving family by his side, at University Hospital, London, on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Devoted husband to Maria Regina for 60 wonderful years. Cherished father of Isabel Teixeira (Gilbert) and Frank Melo (Angela). Adored grandfather of Kierstin Melo (Peter), Madison Melo, Vanessa Teixeira, and James Teixeira. Dear brother of Manuel Melo and Antonio Melo.
Benjamin is reunited in heaven with his beloved sons Manuel (1967) and Paul (1986), and his sisters Águeda de Medeiros Melo and Maria Helena Amaral.
He will be forever remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends across Canada, Portugal, and the United States.
Born on the island of São Miguel, Azores, Benjamin brought with him the dreams, resilience, and values of his homeland when he journeyed to Canada to build a better life. A hardworking entrepreneur with a spunky spirit and strong will, Benjamin was known for his endless generosity and his deep love for those around him. Always ready to lend a hand to a neighbour or friend, he lived his life anchored in kindness, loyalty, and faith.
His greatest pride and joy were his family – his beloved wife, his children, and his grandchildren, who lit up his heart every day. In his early years of fatherhood, Benjamin was an active part of the Portuguese communities of West Lorne and London, helping to strengthen the bonds of culture and friendship. He had a zest for life, a passion for travel, and a love of gardening, nurturing both plants and people with patience and care. Benjamin was also a lifelong soccer fan, fiercely devoted to the Benfica Club, never missing a match and cheering for his team with the full passion of his heart.
Benjamin’s life was a testament to hard work, love, resilience, and the joy of simple pleasures. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply and the countless lives he touched with his generosity and spirit.
