The following is a guest article by James Close, C.Tech, who has worked for SBM Engineering since 2014 as Structural/Building Design Division Team Lead and Project Lead. James graduated from Fanshawe College in Architectural Technology where he was named to the Dean’s Honour Roll. He provides engineering and consultation services for Double Black Construction, whose primary source for quality steel structures is Summit Steel Buildings.

It’s my opinion that designing and utilizing pre-engineered steel systems offers several advantages and benefits for building designers. Some benefits I’ve found when designing with pre-engineered building solutions is that it makes the construction process faster with greater structural integrity and durability while offering versatility and flexibility.

One of the significant advantages of pre-engineered steel systems is their rapid construction time. The use of standardized components and prefabricated elements ensures faster assembly and on-site installation. This speed can result in significant time savings for both designers and clients.

Steel is also known for its strength, durability, and resistance to natural elements, making them capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions, seismic activity, and heavy loads. Pre-engineered buildings are suitable for a variety of project types.

Pre-engineered steel systems allow for flexible designs and easy customization. Their modular nature enables architects and designers to create unique and innovative structures, accommodating various architectural styles and design requirements.

Steel Building Design Versus Other Materials or Building Systems:
Designing for steel buildings differs from working with other materials, such as traditional brick and mortar or wood, in several ways – structural considerations and design flexibility particularly. Steel buildings rely on steel frameworks, requiring designers to consider factors such as load-bearing capacity, structural connections, and deflection. Understanding the properties of steel and its behavior under different loads is crucial for creating safe and reliable designs. Steel systems provide greater design flexibility compared to traditional materials. The high strength-to-weight ratio of steel allows for larger open spaces, longer spans, and taller structures. This versatility enables designers to create expansive interior spaces and incorporate modern architectural features.

Ideal Situations for Pre-Engineering Building Solutions:
Pre-engineered building solutions are suitable for a wide range of projects and can be recommended in various situations, including industrial and commercial applications and Energy-Efficient Construction.

Pre-engineered steel systems are commonly used in industrial and commercial sectors due to their ability to accommodate large open spaces and heavy loads. Warehouses, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, and retail buildings often benefit from the speed, versatility, and cost-effectiveness of pre-engineered steel construction. Pre-engineered steel systems can be combined with energy-efficient insulation materials and sustainable design practices to create environmentally friendly buildings. The inherent recyclability of steel also contributes to the green credentials of these structures.

Recommendations, Advice, and Best Practices:
My recommendation for professionals working with pre-engineered steel systems would be the following.

a. Collaborative Design Approach: Engage in early collaboration with structural engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic design approach that considers the specific requirements of pre-engineered steel systems.

b. Thorough Understanding of Codes and Standards: Familiarize yourself with the relevant building codes and industry standards governing steel construction. Adhering to these regulations ensures compliance and safety in your designs.

c. Continuous Learning and Professional Development: Stay updated with the latest advancements and innovations in pre-engineered steel systems through continuing education, seminars, and industry conferences. This knowledge will enhance your design capabilities and allow you to leverage the full potential of these systems.

d. Effective Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with clients, contractors, and manufacturers throughout the design and construction process. Clear communication ensures that everyone is aligned with project goals and minimizes the potential for errors or misunderstandings.

Designing with pre-engineered steel systems provides numerous advantages, including faster construction, structural integrity, and design flexibility. Understanding the differences in designing for steel buildings compared to other materials is essential for successful implementation. Pre-engineered building solutions find applications in various sectors, and following best practices such as collaborative design, continuous learning, and effective communication can help professionals excel in this field. By taking advantage of the benefits of pre-engineered steel systems and adhering to industry best practices, building designers can create exceptional structures that meet the evolving needs of their clients.
