Successful Steel Building Projects Start Before Arrival
Frank Melo • April 9, 2026
When a steel building project takes us to distant locations throughout the United States or other provinces or territories, the real work begins well before the first truck rolls onto site. Successful steel erection is not only about cranes, bolts and beams – it is about preparation, coordination and discipline.
With Double Black Construction, our team understands that remote and travel-based projects leave little room for error. Delays caused by missing equipment, poor logistics or incomplete site readiness can quickly become expensive. That’s why every out-of-town project is approached with a detailed pre-construction plan designed to keep crews safe, productive and on schedule.
Planning is the First Phase of Construction
Steel erection moves fast once it starts. Crews need to maintain momentum so equipment must be available as needed, and each day’s work should compound toward completion. Strong planning before mobilizing helps eliminate wasted time and prevents avoidable disruptions.
Especially for distant projects away from our head quarters and warehouse, preparation becomes even more important because replacements, additional labour or last-minute rentals are not always easy to secure.
Manpower Matters
Steel building installation depends on experienced people
who know how to work safely and efficiently as a team. That means selecting the right crew size, assigning responsibilities clearly and confirming availability for the full duration of the project.
John Lohan
understands how important experience is. Skilled ironworkers and erection crews
understand sequencing, alignment tolerances, bolt-up procedures and how to solve field challenges without losing momentum. A dependable crew often becomes the difference between a stressful project and a successful one.
Accommodation That Supports Performance
A productive crew needs proper rest. Securing quality accommodations close to the job site is a practical investment that reduces travel fatigue, saves daily commute time and helps workers stay focused.
When crews are working long days in demanding conditions, having clean, reliable lodging nearby supports morale and performance throughout the project. Good planning here can make a noticeable difference over the course of a multi-week build.
Of course, we can accommodate client requests to hire from the local workforce and train as necessary. We have our own dedicated teams but are flexible to the needs of every job situation.
Equipment Strategy: Bring What You Need, Source What Makes Sense
Every project requires a different equipment plan. Before leaving for site, Double Black Construction reviews what tools and machinery should travel with the crew and what can be sourced locally.
This may include:
- Telehandlers
- Boom lifts
- Welding equipment
- Safety gear
- Fuel arrangements
- Material handling tools
- Crane scheduling and lift planning
Booking cranes and specialty equipment in advance is critical. If a crane is unavailable when steel arrives, schedules can slip immediately. Pre-planning lift sequences also ensures crews can work efficiently once erection begins.
Safety Readiness Before Day One
We take the safety of our teams
very seriously. No project should begin with missing paperwork or expired certifications. Before mobilization, every crew member is ready with required training and documentation. Some of these are CSTS certifications, fall protection training, equipment operation qualifications, site-specific orientation requirements and full PPE and task-specific gear.
Safety preparation
before arrival also avoids startup delays and reinforces a professional culture from the first day on site.
Coordination with the General Contractor
One of the most important steps before travelling to a job is to confirm responsibilities and ensure the site is truly ready. Double Black Construction has the experience in site excavation, preparing concrete foundations and retaining walls
and structural steel installation so our teams can do as much as is needed. We’ll work closely with general contractors
and project managers before mobilization to confirm critical items including:
- Foundations are completed and cured
- Anchor bolts are secured for placement and elevation
- Site access is clear for trucks and cranes
- Laydown areas are prepared
- Delivery schedules are confirmed
- Other trades are organized coordinated
Arriving to an unprepared site can waste valuable time and money. Clear communication beforehand helps everyone stay aligned.
Experience Creates Efficiency
Out-of-province steel building installation requires more than construction ability – it requires logistics, leadership and foresight. With John Lohan’s hands-on field experience and Double Black Construction’s commitment to preparation, clients gain a contractor who understands how to execute projects professionally wherever the work is located.
