Smart Choices for Worker Safety Gear

John Lohan • Jun 27, 2023

Construction sites can be potentially dangerous places. High-visibility clothing and vests protect your most important resources at low costs – especially if you know where to get them!

The jobsite is a busy place, full of many different team members, doing a wide variety of tasks, each inevitably requiring huge amounts of heavy material or large tough-to-stop machinery. Potential for accidents is substantial. Small oversights can be lethal. Simple safety measures, like wearing a high-visibility vest, make all the difference.

There is Never a Bad Time to Plan for Safety
In addition to producing the most durable and complete pre-engineered steel buildings, the safety of our workers is a primary concern for Double Black Construction. We go to every length to ensure our teams of skilled tradespeople can work at their best, as comfortable as possible, taking the necessary safety precautions and measures so everyone returns home at the end of the day.

Recently, I was reminded of how important the little details can be. We were starting two large projects (one in Brandon, Manitoba and the other on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia) and needed to order a new supply of belts, harnesses, PPE, helmets and other gear. Part of every worker kit includes high-visibility shirts and vests with reflective tape to help prevent accidents.

As an Abbotsford-based company, it was important to support a local manufacturer as much as possible. I tasked our marketing department with finding the highest quality clothing at reasonable prices (controlling budgets in another concern in the construction industry, of course). As expected, they came back to me with new supplier that met our criteria.

A Local, Preferred Source for Jobsite Work Gear
Big K Clothing is a locally owned and operated company in British Columbia supplying safety clothing for construction, oil and gas, forestry and mining industries. Their gear is approved by CSA and WCB and is UL certified to meet the highest quality standards. In an introductory corporate video on their website, Zak Karim, second-generation owner and general manager, talks about how the company has been manufacturing in Canada for over 50 years, out of a 60,000 square foot warehouse in the Grandview-Woodland area of Vancouver with staff of 45 people. Big K Clothing is a one-stop shop that includes production, printing and custom work with a goal to keep people safe and visible.

As a first-time client, I was thoroughly impressed with the gear we purchased! It’s well made with very tough materials with resistant stitching that shows lots of attention to detail. We purchased 100% cotton orange high-visibility t-shirts (model BK6978) and orange poly/cotton surveyor’s vest with eight pockets (model BK305ORG) that will be able to put up with a lot of wear and tear. Our logo and web address were screen printed on each item to help promote our company and an embroidered patch on the surveyor’s vests adds a touch of professionalism when dealing with clients and the public.

Although Big K has a showroom in Vancouver, they are a manufacturing and wholesaling operation that sells through a network of online sites and brick and mortar retail stores. A quick Google search will reveal suppliers close to your area, or you can give Zak a call and he’ll point you in the right direction. You have to love a company where the boss answers the telephone line!
